Lead Acid, Gel and AGM Batteries for UPS and Industrial Applications

Lead, Gel, and AGM Batteries for UPS and Industry

Professional Batteries for Power Continuity and Industrial Applications

Lead, gel, and AGM batteries are essential for ensuring power continuity in professional and industrial environments. Used in uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), emergency systems, telecommunications, and industrial applications, they offer reliability and consistent performance over time.

Types of Batteries for UPS and Industry

AGM Batteries (Absorbent Glass Mat)

AGM batteries are the standard for modern UPS systems:

  • Sealed VRLA technology: Maintenance-free, no acid leaks
  • High starting current: Ideal for high loads and power surges
  • Cycle resistance: Withstand numerous charge/discharge cycles
  • Low self-discharge: Maintain charge even during prolonged standby
  • Versatile installation: Can be installed in any position
  • Lifespan: 5-7 years under optimal conditions

Gel Batteries

Gel batteries offer superior performance for critical applications:

  • Gelified electrolyte: Maximum safety, zero maintenance
  • High cycle life: Up to 1200 cycles at 50% discharge
  • Temperature resistance: Stable performance from -20°C to +60°C
  • Deep discharge: Better tolerate deep discharges compared to AGMs
  • Critical applications: Ideal for telecommunications, solar energy, marine
  • Superior lifespan: Up to 10-12 years in float service

VRLA Lead-Acid Batteries

VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) batteries are the economical and reliable solution:

  • Sealed and safe: Safety valve for gas recombination
  • Low cost: Optimal quality/price ratio
  • Proven reliability: Technology tested for decades
  • Wide availability: All capacities from 1.2Ah to 200Ah

Main Applications

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)

UPS batteries ensure uninterrupted power for:

  • Servers and data centers: Data protection and operational continuity
  • IT systems: PCs, workstations, corporate networks
  • Medical equipment: Hospitals, clinics, medical practices
  • Security systems: Video surveillance, access control
  • Telecommunications: Telephone exchanges, repeaters, BTS

Industrial Applications

Batteries for industrial sectors:

  • Industrial automation: PLCs, control systems, robotics
  • Emergency lighting: Safety lights, signage
  • Fire protection systems: Smoke detection panels, fire pumps
  • Renewable energy: Photovoltaic, wind, off-grid storage
  • Light traction: Forklifts, AGVs, aerial platforms
  • Marine and RV: Onboard services, energy storage

Available Capacities and Voltages

12V Batteries

The most common for UPS and industrial applications:

  • 1.2Ah - 9Ah: Small UPS, emergency lighting, alarms
  • 12Ah - 18Ah: 500VA to 1000VA UPS, small systems
  • 24Ah - 40Ah: 1000VA to 2000VA UPS, medium applications
  • 50Ah - 100Ah: 3000VA to 6000VA UPS, solar systems
  • 100Ah - 200Ah: Industrial UPS, large systems, energy storage

6V Batteries

For high-capacity series configurations:

  • 180Ah - 420Ah: Battery banks for three-phase UPS, large systems

2V Batteries

Single cells for professional battery banks:

  • 200Ah - 3000Ah: Telephone exchanges, data centers, substations

UPS Battery Configurations

Single-Phase UPS

  • 500VA - 1000VA: 1x 12V 7-9Ah battery
  • 1000VA - 1500VA: 1x 12V 9-12Ah battery or 2x 12V in series (24V)
  • 2000VA - 3000VA: 2x 12V 9Ah batteries in series or 1x 12V 18-40Ah

Three-Phase UPS

  • 10kVA - 20kVA: 12V or 2V battery banks in series
  • 20kVA - 100kVA: 2V single-cell battery banks

Runtime and Sizing

Runtime depends on:

  • Battery capacity (Ah): Higher capacity = longer runtime
  • Connected load (W): Lower load = longer runtime
  • UPS efficiency: Typically 85-95%
  • Ambient temperature: 20-25°C is ideal

Practical example: 1000VA UPS (800W) with 12V 9Ah battery = approximately 10 minutes of runtime at 100% load, 20-30 minutes at 50% load.

Lifespan and Service Life

Battery lifespan depends on:

  • Operating temperature: Every 10°C above 25°C halves the lifespan
  • Depth of discharge: Deep discharges reduce available cycles
  • Number of cycles: AGM 300-500 cycles, Gel 800-1200 cycles
  • Usage mode: Float (standby) or cyclic

Expected lifespan:

  • AGM batteries in float: 5-7 years
  • Gel batteries in float: 10-12 years
  • VRLA batteries in float: 3-5 years

Maintenance and Monitoring

To maximize lifespan:

  • Maintain ambient temperature between 20-25°C
  • Periodically check voltage (12.6V-13.2V for charged 12V batteries)
  • Check UPS charge status
  • Test runtime every 6 months
  • Replace batteries every 3-5 years (AGM) or 8-10 years (Gel)
  • Clean terminals of oxidation
  • Check connection tightness

When to Replace UPS Batteries

Replace batteries if:

  • The UPS indicates "replace battery"
  • Runtime is reduced by 50% or more
  • Batteries are over 5 years old (AGM) or 10 years old (Gel)
  • You notice swelling or leaks
  • Resting voltage is below 12V (for 12V batteries)
  • The UPS goes into bypass or shuts down during blackouts

Installation and Replacement

UPS Battery Replacement

  1. Turn off the UPS and disconnect the load
  2. Open the battery compartment
  3. Photograph the connections before disconnecting them
  4. Disconnect the terminals (negative - first, then positive +)
  5. Remove the exhausted batteries
  6. Insert the new batteries of the same capacity and voltage
  7. Connect the terminals (positive + first, then negative -)
  8. Check polarity and tightness
  9. Close the compartment and restart the UPS
  10. Allow to charge for 8-12 hours before first use

Warning: For three-phase UPS or complex battery banks, consult qualified personnel.
